Chapter 23

Making Poor Choices is a Choice

WILL

When Lucy returned, we were both so busy I barely had a chance to say anything to her all day. I caught her watching me once when we were both near the center doors of the resort, but as soon as I met her eye, she hurried away in the other direction.

Was Lucy avoiding me? Playing hard to get, maybe? Or did she think we’d made a mistake?

She left for the day without saying goodbye, and a little flicker of worry began to waver inside me. Had it been a mistake getting involved with her? She wasn’t exactly an open book. I needed this project to succeed, and now I was worried I’d just thrown the proverbial wrench into the system.

But as much as I needed this job to go well, I was even more worried about things with Lucy. I had feelings where she was concerned, and while I wasn’t quite ready to look at them closely, I knew I couldn’t just shut them off either.

I met the others in the bar that night for a drink before dinner, and was impressed to see that Ghost had already found frames for the movie posters, which were hanging around the room beneath Marvin’s photos.

“Got these up quick,” I told him, swiveling on a stool to face the poster advertising ‘Amazon Cruise,’ another movie I’d never heard of.

“Thought there was a chance they’d mean something to someone when we open the bar tomorrow night. Maybe they can help us pick up the thread.” He took a sip of his drink, staring at the poster. “Right now we’re at a dead end.”

I sighed and swigged my own drink. Dead end felt like the right expression. “At least construction out back is on schedule,” I said, to remind us both that not everything was going wrong. And to remind Ghost that we weren’t here for a crazy treasure hunt. We were here to launch this resort.

“Good.” Ghost gave me an evaluative look. “And Lucy?”

“What are you asking me?”

“Things between you are . . .”

“I have no idea. Good? Or maybe nonexistent?”

“How could either be true?” Ghost turned his stool back to the bar, glancing around at the others, who were deep in conversation at the other end.

“I don’t know. Things were really good earlier this week. I took her to the movie, and then . . .” I didn’t kiss and tell, but was pretty sure Ghost got my meaning.

“Got it. Go on.”

“But all week, we’ve been crazed managing the build, and today she took off without even saying goodbye. I think she thinks it was a mistake.”

“Thinking what she thinks is always going to be a problem.”

“From the guy who’s clearly an expert on relationships.”

“Hey, I’ve had relationships,” Ghost said. “I just don’t have one right now. I’ve got enough on my plate.”

He definitely did. “And things for you are good?” I looked up at him quickly, then back down to my drink. We didn’t talk
